Thulani holidays in Crete

CRETE:

Day seven:
We Arrive at villa Truli. We have been coming here for about eight years, to this beautiful secluded villa in the hills of Stalos.

Day eight: A day to relax by the pool. Thulani takes Mlle Lapin boating.

Then late afternoon we all go karting where Thulani, Mlle Lapin and Sophie meet a few locals! Then everyone gets ready to race putting on not so glamorous hairnets before donning crash helmets! Joe and Thulani in the lead followed by dad and Rufus. Thulani and Joe win the race and Mile Lapin is very impressed.

Day nine: Lake Kournas
Located in western Crete, Lake Kournas is the only lake the island has to offer and is well worth a visit. It is easy to get to by car located between the towns of Chania and Rethymnon.

The lake is stunning; a sapphire blue teardrop with edges of turquoise, surrounded by vegetation. It's a hub for wildlife, especially turtles and it's not uncommon to see eagles circling high above.
The lake itself has a shallow area closer to the shore, while the more adventurous can hire a pedalo and paddle to the center of the crater.

We had a great afternoon at the lake, there are a number of lovely tavernas overlooking the lake where you can have a lazy lunch or an ice cream and some freshly squeezed juice. I (Karen) took Thulani and Mlle Lapin to my favorite taverna overlooking the lake and read a book stopping occasionally to look at the scenery whilst sipping a refreshing drink. Thulani and Mlle Lapin cuddled and admired the view.

Alastair meanwhile took the children on a pedalo with slide and they had a fabulous time until they were all worn out. He then peddled them round the edge of the lake spotting the local wildlife. The lake is amazingly clear, they saw fish, eels and birds. In previous years we have seen terrapins too! The water level was the highest we have ever seen it due to heavy winter rains, maybe this was the reason for the lack of terrapins as there was hardly any beach.

Day ten:A relaxing day by the pool then in the evening, then out to a taverna for supper and fun at a mini adventure park.
Mimi and Thulani loved the carousel and also the bungy trampolining. Joe was impressed that Mimi and Thulani could do somersaults as he could only manage to bounce up and down.

Day eleven: This morning we got up early and went for a delicious breakfast in Chania after which we took a horse drawn carriage to the market. Our horse was called Rambo and he certainly lived up to his name.

The local market is fascinating with lots to see. I love to smell the fresh herb stalls and look at all the locally grown vegetables and the children loved looking at the chickens and baby rabbits, that was, until I explained they were not pets but for cooking! There were lots of bags of snails too but I just couldn’t persuade the children that they might make a tasty supper.

Chania Khania or Xania (I have seen it spelt many ways) lies on the north coast of west Crete and is the capital of Chania Prefecture(district) Chania Prefecture covers the western most end of Crete and features a combination of many beautiful beaches, small fertile plains, high mountains and deep gorges, such as the Samaria Gorge. Chania Prefecture is the greenest part of Crete island, as the range of White Mountains ensures the highest rainfall in Crete.
Chania is one of the oldest cities in Crete, with a rich and tumultuous history. it is a city which has preserved its traditional architecture and most of its monuments from Venetian and Turkish times. The Venetian harbour with its lighthouse and the old town in the centre have given Chania the reputation of the most picturesque city in Crete and has thousands of visitors each year.

The heart of Chania is still the old town, with its narrow, labyrinthine alleyways and listed buildings dating from different periods. Many of these buildings have been turned into small hotels, restaurants, shops or homes.
The old town stretches out parallel to the Venetian harbour, from Firkas Fortressand the maratime museum to the Gate of Sand to the east of the arsenals. This is the part of the town within the Venetian walls and includes Byzantine Chania, once enclosed within less extensive walls.
The Byzantine walls protected the fortress of Kastelli, the hill which was first inhabited in the Neolithic period.
We then left the old harbor area of Chania and headed for a pretty beach called (Kalives)Kalyves. There we met our holiday rep Ray, who we have known for a good few years for a drink and also to try out a nearby taverna he had mentioned to us. We had a delicious fish and chip lunch there overlooking the crystal clear sea while the children paddled in the river of icy cold water that had run down from the white mountains (still snow covered in parts) to the sea which was lovely and warm!.

Photos of Simpsons hotel called GK Beach (hmm would like to come back here with just hubby ).
Day twelve: We just relaxed by the pool today read and admired the view while the little ones swam and played.

Then we headed in to Chania for our supper at an Asian restaurant. We sat in a beautiful secret courtyard full of lush vegetation and heady scents of beautiful flowers. We ate satay chicken skewers with peanut sauce, peking duck pancakes, tempura prawns and chilli dip, and spicy prawn thai soup, ribs, noodles, rice and chicken in black bean sauce. After that we did a bit of window shopping as we were all so full after the wonderful feast.

At the restaurant Mimi was fascinated by the vegetable flowers.
Day thirteen: Dad and Children go to a water park, whilst Mum, Thulani and Mlle Lapin prefer to stay at the villa and rest.

Day fourteen: We travel home and again I forget to take photos as on the journey outward. Although I think it was probably wise as I would hate to have lost Thulani and Mlle Lapin along the way. Keeping tabs on five people and luggage was quite enough of a task as it was let alone two extras as well!

Thulani in Dorset Day 1-6

Day one:
Late in the afternoon Thulani and Mlle Lapin arrive in their travel box sat on a tiny cushion snuggled together on the huge journal that is so much fatter than the first day it set out.

Day two:
A quiet morning then Thulani heads to street dance class with Mimi in Sherborne.

Day three: Thulani goes to school with Mimi.

Making new friends and drawing.

Mimi, Thulani, Mlle Lapin & Mimi’s best friend Clarendon.

Stopping for a drink and a snack. Then Time for some number work.
Day four:

Today Thulani and Mlle Lapin went to visit Cerne Abbas to see the Cerne Giant. We had a lovely chat with fellow travelers, Steve and Helena, who had come to see The Giant too.

The Cerne Giant is nearly 60 meters high and 51 meters wide. It is one of three ancient figures cut into the English chalk downlands, the others being the long man of Wilmington in East Sussex and the Uffington white horse in Berkshire. The giant is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and was given to the National Trust in 1920 to ensure its permanent protection.

Who is he?
The origin of the Giant is still unknown. Some believe that he represents the Roman god Hercules and is over 1,500 years old. Others suggest that the Giant is a caricature of Oliver Cromwell, and is only about 350 years old. This argument centers on the fact that there is no reference to the Giant in any historic documents until 1694.

Local folklore suggests that if you want to conceive a child you should try it on the Giant as he is purported to be a very strong fertility symbol. I can speak from experience as when I first moved to Dorset we rented a house in Cerne Abbas and within a month I was expecting my first baby! So with that in mind I didn’t take Thulani and Mlle Lapin too close...Mlle Lapin thought it was very romantic being in love near a hillside .....she is a rabbit after all!

Then we went to see reputedly at one time the smallest pub in England.

This little flint thatched building on the banks of the Cerne is typical of many old buildings throughout the valley. Tradition has it that King Charles II asked for a drink of ale/porter here when it was still a forge. On being told it had no license the King promptly granted it one so that the smith could oblige.

A pub called the Nutshell at Bury St Edmunds claimed also to be the smallest pub too and this led to a bit of rivalry and in 1982 a football match was held to settle the matter, unfortunately The Nutshell won and they also won the re-match.
Day five:

Ballet Class first, then off to the school fair, where Thulani enjoyed the bouncy castle and some pony riding but Thulani drew the line at blue ice lollies and face painting!

Day six: Packing for holidays then taking Sadie the dog to kennels. PANO STALOS,

Thulani in Dorset

Thulani has arrived to stay with us, the Danby family. We are Karen (mum) Alastair (dad) Sophie (eldest daughter) Rufus (eldest son) Joe (10yrs) and Mimi (4yrs).

We live in Chetnole a little rural village in the county of Dorset in the south of England. At the heart of the village is our Church, village hall and the Chetnole Inn not forgetting the Playing field.

Dad Alastair works in the nearby town of Sherborne (which is about 7 miles away) and the children go to school there too. Eldest daughter Sophie works in the village next to us called Leigh, in a care home for the elderly, although she will be heading off to Leeds university in September to start her medical degree.

St Peters church Chetnole:

The 15th century tower is the location of some interesting gargoyles. One depicts a huge demon with heads where its eyes should be. Another of the gargoyles appears to be straining in a somewhat constipated manor. The nave and the north aisle dates from the 13th century and the chancel from about 1860.

The Village Hall is a small hall which is utilized for many meetings, clubs and keep fit activities. Every Wednesday morning a coffee morning is held and some local produce is on sale along with the availability of post office facilities. A traveling Library van visits Chetnole too!

We do not have a train station as most people would imagine but we have what is called a halt, which means that if we want to catch a passing train we have to flag it down like you would a taxi!! The children love this, as in the summer we occasionally take the train to Weymouth beach for the day, returning after a fish and chip supper on the seafront. We also occasionally take the train to Bath(famous for its Roman Baths) for shopping, rugby watching and visiting our friends. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chetnole_railway_station

We love to go to the Chetnole Inn for lunch or supper as the food is delicious and Mimi likes to visit the giant rabbit that lives in their garden. http://www.thechetnoleinn.co.uk She also likes to go to the playing field to have fun on the swings and slide before heading home to Neals Lane in Chetnole.

France, Friday 15 June- Sun 17 June

Friday Night is Music Night !! Concert held in the Foyer Rural
Saturday Night is Neighbours' Night at Concha & Hubert's Home
(Thulani gets to play a Vieille ~ an ancient French folk instrument)
Sunday morning doing some gardening and Thulani has fallen in love with a Lapin ( is a lady rabbit in France called a Lapine ??!

If you look carefully, you can see Thulani sitting on the edge of the stage on the right. The concert went extremely well and Paula was very proud of her pupils. Highlights of the concert have even been put up on YouTube.

Here in the country because people do not live on top of each other (as they do in a town) so they need to travel a bit further to be sociable, and once a year a "Voisinade" is organised where local families, friends and neighbours get together to talk, eat, drink, make music and have a thoroughly good time. This photo shows Hubert & Concha with Thulani. They are our delightful neighbours who hosted Saturday night's Voisinade event. They knew he was heading off to England for the next stage of his world tour, so they organised a Union Jack flag with the French bread ..... He wonders what he is going to do when he gets to England ?!!

Thulani discovered a Folk Instrument tonight called a Veille, but Paula told him that in England it's called a "Hurdy Gurdy" Paula put some Wikipedia information about the history of this instrument into Thulani's log book. It is very strange and you can see Thulani with the instrument, A clarinettist came to the Voisinade too and that is not such an unusual instrument. Sadly he didn't give a rendition of Acker Bilk's "Stranger on the Shore !"

Oh, and in case you were wondering if your eyes were playing tricks with you .... if you think you see a rabbit with Thulani in some of these photos, I have to let you know that Thulani and Madamoiselle Lapin seem to have fallen in love ..... He met her at the concert and they have, so far, not been separated ..... It may mean that the Mlle Lapin might have to travel to England with him, because at this stage it seems to be getting serious .... Paula told him not to rush into anything, but I wanted to show them sitting among the pansies .....

Sunday morning 17th June was bright and sunny. Paula took some photos with Thulani and Gabriel & Florian and their father Eric, who came for a nice morning session of music. You must admire the rose bush which grows around a pergolas in our Garden! It is such a big garden, we have to have a sit-on tractor mower !! Thulani was a bit too small to drive it :(

In the last photo you see Thulani with Dylan and a white cat. Dylan is an Australian boy whose mother is working with the Trakehner Horses at Cussay for 3 months. That will be Thulani's last official visit this week before he is packed off to England ..... I'm waiting with baited breath to find out whether this Bear/Rabbit relationship is going to to blossom and become reality ?? .... More soon .....
